Day 3: Miradolo Terme to Orio Litta; Rainy Days

Today was 8 miles and 200′ of climbing. Totals are 30 miles and 700′.

We knew it was going to rain. And it did! We started out dressed for moderate rainy weather.

Regular hiking clothes and a poncho. Then we stepped outside!  The wind was blowing, the rain pouring and we weren’t making the right fashion statement.

Within a mile, we were looking for some sort of dry spot to do a wardrobe swap! We found a bus stop and began adding layers; sweaters, rain pants, balaclava, gloves, etc. In short order, we were back on the road, warmer and drier!

Just to make sure we appreciated the rain, a train crossing closed in front of us during probably the most intense part of the downpour. And we waited, and waited. The train finally came and we went.

We are now in a very nice hostel in Orio Litta. We have met 2 Swedes (Elizabeth and Falke) and a Dutch woman, Marion. They are great company in this walk.

Everything we own is now on racks, drying. Such is the life …

Ciao!

  1. Doesn’t sound like a whole lotta fun today! Glad you guys have all weather gear and know how to use it! You truly have mastered the whole walking life, and capable of handling any kind of weather. Quite proud of you! Still hot here, getting up into the hundreds every day. I am ready to be done with this heat! So which would you prefer heat or rain? You had the heat last year so guess you get the rain this year. Is either one easier? ❤️

    1. Hi Willow! It’s funny, we’ve been having a lot of conversations lately about: did we bring the right gear? Mostly, the answer is yes, but we were a bit sloppy in packing. Too many light clothing items (even for a summer Camino). But at least we have the needed warm layers and rain gear!
We’ve also talked a lot about cold versus hot Caminos. There are pros and cons for each. We’re kind of leaning towards a preferring the hot Camino. At least there, there’s some period of the day (usually evening) where you can be outside comfortably! As an FYI, it’s currently 55F outside and will drop to 48F tonight. That’s cold for us hawaii blooded people!
